Gang Resistance Education
and Training (G.R.E.A.T.)
Starting in the fall of 2006, the Yakima Police Department,
in partnership with the Yakima School District, plans to
implement the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.)
Program in Yakima schools. Patterned after the DARE program,
but designed to address gang membership and violence, the
G.R.E.A.T. Program will be taught in all the elementary
and middle schools in the district. Uniformed police officers
will deliver established, enjoyable curriculum to address
life choices and consequences of violence and gang activity.
Additionally we plan to implement two other, after school,
GREAT components. The Family component is designed to bring
the GREAT message into the homes by involving adult family
members. The summer component will provide positive structure
to the otherwise idle summer months. During the summer
the GREAT kids will be provided opportunities for fun,
safe, structured activities including public service events.
